Well, it was my cousin's confirmation in the late seventies – 1977 or '78, I think. The weather was really nice, I must say, especially after the couple of weeks of rain preceding the celebration.
I was in the church with my family and of course the family of my cousin was there as well. But as it got nearer to ten o'clock, it became evident that most of the family wasn't coming. We knew to expect this since there had been quite a lot of tension between my cousin's family and my grandparents. Anyway, we were very surprised that nearly no one came. I didn't know about the controversy being that serious. They don't tell ten year old kids these thing, you know.
I sensed the tension in the air, though, but can't remember the day that well. It's a long ago and I was little.
But anyway, the church part went alright (everything considered), but the real surprise came, when we got to my cousin's place where they were supposed to throw the actual party.
There was one of those flying cars they have in the States parked next to the toolshed and some robots hanging around the yard. I don't know why, but my cousin's family had locked their door when they left for the church, so the robot people couldn't get in.
As you probably figured out by now, the robot family were our cousins from USA. They hadn't found the church and couldn't take part in the actual confirmation, but they had decided to wait us there in the yard.
We were very thrilled about seeing them. You know us Finns in the seventies, most of us hadn't even seen a robot before!
The whole day went very well from then on. We played with the robot kids and showed them all the animals in the farm. They were at least as thrilled about the pigs and horses as we were about them, because most living things were completely new and unknown for them.
And this picture... Well, if I can recall, it's their father Bill talking about harvesting or something with my parents.
